The vocabulary
- Test-optional: you choose whether to submit; scores help if strong and are ignored if withheld.
- Test-blind (or test-free): scores are not considered at all, even if you send them.
- Test-flexible: another exam, such as AP or IB results, may substitute.
- Test-required: several schools have reinstated requirements — check each one every year.
The submit rule
Find the school's most recent middle 50% score range. If your score is at or above the 50th percentile, submit. If it is below the 25th percentile, withhold. In between, submit if the rest of your file is average for the school and withhold if the rest of your file is strong.
What replaces the score
When you withhold, the transcript carries more weight — course rigor, upward trend, and grades in your intended field. Essays and recommendations also matter more, because there is one fewer number to argue with.
Do not forget scholarships
Many merit scholarships and some honors colleges still require scores even when admission does not. Check the scholarship page separately from the admissions page before deciding not to test.
